Box Score Jersey City, NJ -- The Alliance University women's soccer program opened its conference schedule with a home match-up against the Georgian Court University Lions on Saturday afternoon. GCU entered the contest with a record of 1-2-1, while AU posted a 1-3 record before the game.
The first 45 minutes didn't provide much action on either end of the field with a slight 4-2 shot advantage for the Lions at the break. Both goalkeepers finished the first half with a pair of saves. Alliance cranked up the heat with the start of the second half. Especially, freshman Alexis Kufta knew to stand out in the first 20 minutes of the second half dribbling a few times past multiple Lions without finding the back of the net. The best opportunity for Alliance came off the foot of Daniela Frey when she got on the end of a cross from the right side. However, her attempt to the top left corner was denied by the Lions' goalkeeper Alyssa Dias to keep the game tied, 0-0. Alliance continued to push forward and dominated the second 45 minutes outshooting GCU by 8-3 forcing Dias to make five saves in the second half. Unfortunately, none of those attempts on target found their way into the back of the net and the game finished with a 0-0 tie.
Mia Thomson led AU with three shots on target in the game and goalkeeper Celine Grothe earned her first collegiate shutout. Alliance will be back in action on Tuesday when they host the University of Bridgeport Purple Knights in another CACC matchup at 1:00 pm.
