The Nyack College softball team traveled to Chestnut Hill in a conference matchup on Monday, dropping the first game in a 6-3 loss but coming back to win the next one in a 5-4 victory to earn a split for the day.
In the first game, Chestnut Hill struck first with two unearned runs in the bottom of the second. The Warriors scored in the top of the fourth as
Morgan Hans got on base on a ground-rule double, advanced to third on
Nicole Wisser's groundout, and then was brought home by
Katalina Padilla's sacrifice RBI. Chestnut Hill responded immediately in the bottom of the fourth by scoring three more runs, putting Nyack at a 5-1 deficit. In the top of the sixth inning, the Warriors had two runners in scoring position with two outs, but the inning ended in a groundout for the third out with no Warriors score. Chestnut Hill added another run in the bottom of the sixth. In the top of the seventh,
Katie Lupinacci led off the comeback attempt with a single, and moved to second as
Erin O'Brien reached first on a fielder's choice. Both runners advanced into scoring position on
Gabrielle Placencia's following groundout, and both were then brought home on
Alissa Brugnoli's single to right center. With two outs,
Morgan Hans doubled to put two more runners in scoring position for Nyack as Brugnoli moved to third, but the Warriors were unable to score any more runs and ended the game in a 6-3 loss.
In the second game, Chestnut Hil again got out to an early lead in the bottom of the second, scoring three runs. The Warriors answered in the top of the third by matching each run.
Stephanie White and
Katie Lupinacci led off with two singles, and
Erin O'Brien reached base on a fielding error to load the bases with no outs.
Gabrielle Placencia doubled to bring in a run, and
Alissa Brugnoli immediately followed with another RBI double.
Aferdita Sinanaj brought in another run on a sacrifice fly to tie the score at 3-3. In the bottom of the third, Chestnut Hill took the lead again on a solo home run. In the top of the fourth,
Katalina Padilla doubled and had
Kayleigh VanDover come in to pinch run, who advanced to third and then was brought home by
Katie Lupinacci with an RBI double. The Warriors took the lead in the top of the fifth when
Alissa Brugnoli singled to get on base, stole second, and then came all the way home in for the run on a wild pitch. The Warriors shut down Chestnut Hill's offense in order for the next two innings and took the 5-4 victory.
